I am sure you have been there before, you are getting ready to leave the house and feel an overwhelming wave of anxiety…

“what if I don’t know enough people there?”

“what is the parking situation going to be?”

“what happens if I have no one to talk to?”

“have I checked that the stove is off?.. I need to do it one more time”

“will my outfit fit in with everyone else or will I look weird.. maybe I just shouldn’t go”

You are noticing anxiety is shrinking your life

You are looking to get back to life you enjoy without feeling constantly preoccupied with anxious thoughts

Struggling with an anxiety disorder can feel like a full time job. Your nervous system is constantly on high alert, thoughts are racing and you have developed certain behavioral patterns as a way to cope. It may be that these patterns once served you, but now these patterns are now interfering with experiencing joy and living your life to the fullest.

My approach to anxiety therapy is to support my clients in developing new coping skills and helping them develop a more compassionate relationship with their anxiety. Depending on each client’s needs and goals, I combine techniques such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP - for those struggling with OCD), Internal Family Systems (IFS - a great approach for understanding the root of your anxiety and developing self compassion), and Comprehensive Behavioral Approach (ComB - specifically designed for clients struggling with hair pulling and skin picking).

It is possible your anxiety may also overlap with other struggles such as…

  • People pleasing

  • Perfectionism

  • ADHD / neurodivergence

  • Feeling “too much” or “not enough”

  • Patterns of overthinking

  • Loneliness or increased isolation

  • Low self-esteem or feeling your worth is tied to achievements

You are not alone if you are noticing any of these difficulties.

I know it may feel distant now, but you can live a life that is not controlled by anxiety.

And I can help you get there.

Alison Mann is a body image and anxiety therapist in New York

Alison Mann, LMSW

Hi, I’m Alison and I’m a licensed psychotherapist.

I am passionate about working with adolescents and adults who are navigating issues with, but not limited to, anxiety/OCD, body image, eating disorders, athletic pressures, chronic illness/pain, ADD/ADHD and body focused repetitive behaviors. I offer a warm, non-judgmental space for us to work together and explore how your life experiences may have led you to feel unable to reach your full potential.

My approach balances having space for reflective growth while also identifying concrete skills and coping tools tailored to your unique goals. I use an integrative approach that draws from numerous modalities such as CBT, DBT, ERP, psychodynamic and mindfulness. I also have training in Mirror Exposure Therapy and CBT-E.

I am passionate about changing/educating about the larger societal messages & beauty standards that make it so much harder for people to live their best life. I firmly believe that we must celebrate diversity of all kinds & that attractiveness comes from our differences rather than the stereotypical narrative and images we’ve been sold.

I look forward to providing the safe space needed to help you and your children thrive.
